The Character of Christ

http://www2.byui.edu/Presentations/transcripts/religionsymposium/2003_01_25_bednar.htm
I could talk all day about this talk! Elder Bednar was in Mesa last October and gave a Q&A fireside directing most of the questions to this point: we are agents to act, not objects to be acted upon. That is when I found out how amazing Elder Bednar is! LOVE him!

This may be my favorite line, "Indeed we must honor our covenants and live worthily and do all that we can do to qualify for the gift; but ultimately the gift of charity possesses us--we do not posses it."

What do you think?

  1. This response is just to the quote shared:

I remember seeing or hearing this quotation before and seeing it as a bit of a paradox. The first part of the sentence shows our role as agents. We are to act: to honor covenants, to live worthily, to do. But, then the latter part of the sentence shows us as seemingly needing to be acted upon: it possesses us. Does this mean that there are limits or exceptions to agency?

I think that part of the answer lies in 2 Nephi 25:23, and reminds us that we need to be acted upon by the Atonement. But perhaps...it is different. Maybe it isn't being "acted upon"? We certainly aren't objects to the Savior.

And, we can be agents and stand still (D&C 123:17). We can be agents and accept a gift without a visible action involved. We can be agents and be possessed if we choose to seek and allow that possession. Thoughts?
